Filming Production: Diary Entries

03/03/2014 - The 5 minute beginning to the documentary, Print Advert and Radio Trailer is complete, now to begin the evaluation process...

27/02/2014 -  We have now filmed all of the extra cutaway shots required, meaning that the filming stage of production is now over.

26/02/2014 -  Today we have planned out which cutaways we will be filming, this includes more footage of hair products and shots of different peoples hairstyles.

24/02/2014 - Today we have been given feedback regarding our first edit and while we do have good footage, we wll require more variety in our shots to achieve our target grades. This will mean there are more cutaway shots in particular to be filmed, and some smarter editing to make our interviews tighter and more interesting.

17/02/2014 - Today we began to look at codes and conventions of documentary adverts, from orint media and radio, in preparation for making our own.

12/02/2014 - Today we have finalised our first 5-minute edit, with the exception of the audio aspect which will be recorded and edited in at a later date. The documentary runs 5 minutes in length exactly and we will be working on it further once we have received feedback on the first edit.

10/02/2014 - This week is Mock Week in college, meaning that we have fewer sessions, but these sessions are longer so we still have the perfect amount of time to edit the documentary. Today we have viewed the footage that we filmed and selected which parts of the filming we will include, looking for which parts of the interviews we thought was most interesting.

05/02/2014 - Today we began the editing process, and we managed to get the intro and opening title sequence for our documentary edited. Over the next few sessions we will aim to edit the documentary to exactly five minutes in length.

03/02/2014 - Today for our final bit of filming we travelled to The Forge in Stockton Heath to record some vox pop interviews. Despite a shaky start, we were eventually successful and recorded a total of 5 interviews, 3 of which will be used in our final documentary.

27/01/2014 - Today we have been mostly working on our Edit Decision List, getting that in order so we will be reayd to begin editing soon.

24/01/2014 - Today we have set up a plan for the coming couple of weeks, seeing as we are coming up to the final parts of our filming now. We have also began looking at our Edit Decision List.

23/1/2014 - Today we have completed our first draft of our TV documentary excluding the voiceover.

22/1/2014 - Today we worked individually to complete the final pieces of our blog. The diary entry is now completely up to date, including everyone's blogs, logging sheet and edit decision list. The editing of the documentary is also in process with a few hairdressers interviews that have been inputted.

20/1/2014 - Today we was supposed to film at Johnson's hairdressers, where we would have filmed cutaway shots of the hair salon and the products. We would have got an interview from Mr Johnson, and also some of the apprentices that are learning to become hairdressers. However, due to complications in the group and that we could not get the equipment meant that we could not film.

17/1/2014 - Today we began the editing process of our documentary. We inputted the opening sequence and some vox-pops and managed to do a minute and 30 seconds of the opening sequence.

16/1/2014 - Today we logged all the videos we had done so far on a logging sheet and stated whether they are useable or not.

15/1/2014 - Today we updated our blogs, this included updating our diary entries and putting our storyboards on for the opening sequence and the pictures of the mise en scene of interviews.

13/1/2014 - Two members of the group re-filmed some of the interviews within college that were unusable - for example some interviews which either had no sound or were incorrectly framed, whilst the other two members began logging the videos we had done so far and also began the edit decision list.

10/01/2014 - Today we focused on updating our blogs with the last week's events on it and we have also ensured that everything is set up for our final hairdresser interview on Monday afternoon.

09/01/2014 - Today we filmed two more blue-screen interviews which both went very well. We have checked over the footage and we believe that it will be usable in our final documentary edit. Today, we also attempted to film our planned Vox-Pop interviews, which meant that two of the group travelled to Warrington Town Centre and set up cameras there. Unfortunately, there were no willing participants so we could not film any content during this time. Hopefully, we will be able to repeat this task soon with better results.

08/1/2014 - Today we had to re-film several of our blue-screen interviews which had run into problems beforehand. We double-checked our equipment to ensure that the microphone was activated and the framing was as it should be. We managed to get a good interview which will prove to be very useful for our main documentary program.

6/1/2014 - Today we went individually as a group to talk to our tutor about our plans for the following lessons. We showed him print screens of the interviews we had previously done and there was a few problems with the camera angle, for example some of the interviewees were not at eye level and when answering question they were looking too far away from the camera rather than just next to the camera.

17/12/2013 - Today, some members of the group went to the Panache hairdressers in Stockton Heath to record an interview with one of the hairdressers who works there. We also got several cutaway/establishing shots both inside and outside of the building which will be very useful when editing our documentary. We also took the opportunity to record an establishing shot of The Original Barber Shop which we had not done during our interview there. We have checked the interview after transferring it to a computer and thankfully, the footage is perfectly usable and there is audio to the footage. You can see several production photos from the Panache filming session below:

13/12/2013- Today we went into Stockton heath to ask around for some more interviews. Fortunately we were able to get an interview booked for the following Tuesday however the other people we went to see told us they would definitely do it but would prefer to do the interview post Christmas.

12/12/2013 - Today we have reviewed our footage up to now and unfortunately we have found that we have not recorded certain interviews properly. Our blue-screen interviews in particular were completely unusable as we had not turned the recording microphones on. This shows unfortunate negligence on our part and we have taken steps to ensure that we double-check our equipment fully before any future filming we do. There were also some problems with framing in some of the interviews, and again we will double-check the framing of each interview so we can minimize the amount of unusable footage we end up with.

11/12/2013 - Unfortunately, none of the group were available to attend Samuel Peter's for a chat, so we have had to reschedule this for another time. We have focused today on updating our blogs fully which we were quite behind on and this will mean we will be able to update our diary entries each day with the work fresh in our minds.

06/12/2013 - Today we were originally due to go to Samuel Peter Hairdressing in Stockton Heath - However, the manager who we were supposed to be interviewing has unfortunately had to pull out due to a funeral. We have now re-arranged this chat for Tuesday, which we will hopefully be able to attend to talk about our set of questions ready for an interview to follow. We have also finally had a response from the Stockton Heath branch of Toni&Guy and will be filming an interview there soon.

05/12/2013 - Today we travelled to The Original Barber Shop in Stockton Heath to record an interview with the shop manager. We asked him a set of pre-set questions just as we did in Rod's Hairdressing yesterday and we believe that the interview went very well, with the manager being particularly talkative and passionate regarding his work, giving us a large amount of material that will prove to be valuable in our documentary project. We also filmed a few cutaway shots of the hairdresser's equipment which we will also put to good use in our main project.

04/12/2013 - Today's filming was our first hairdresser interview, with Rod's Hairdressing in Stockton Heath. The interview went well with the participating staff member offering a very interesting and passionate interview regarding his work. We also filmed a few interesting cutaway shots which we will intercut with our main interview footage to edit our documentary down.

02/12/2013 - We have today filmed several interviews with other students from around college about their hairstyles and opinions on hair which will prove valuable to the documentary project.

29/11/2013 - We have been arranging interviews with hairdressers/barbers in the Stockton Heath area over the past few days, and have managed to get either interviews or chats arranged with The Original Barber Shop, Rod's Hairdressing and Samuel Peter Hairdressing and we are awaiting a response from Toni&Guy over the next few days.

28/11/2013 - Today we produced the opening title sequence to our documentary, which involves the programme title 'Short Cuts' being made from various segments of hair (cut from a wig) that we have dropped and arranged in front of the camera. This ended up looking very good on the camera and should hopefully be easy to edit together for use in the final programme.

13/12/2013- Today we went into Stockton heath to ask around for some more interviews. Fortunately we were able to get an interview booked for the following Tuesday however the other people we went to see told us they would definitely do it but would prefer to do the interview post Christmas.
